The Monthly Essay.

I've decided a monthly contest may help boost participation, so I've resolved to write one fun essay question a month. Answer in the comments, best answer as decided by me, will get bragging rights.

Q: It's Only Rock n' Roll

Aliens from another planet have landed and, what luck, they've landed in your driveway. Being a hospitable intergalactic neighbor, you invite them in. You're all sitting around talking having a great time when one alien says: Hey Earthling, what is this rock n' roll music we hear so much about? We really gotta know. Oh, and by the way, we gotta split in like 10 minutes.

Oh no, you think, I'll only have time to play them a couple tracks. What do you play them?

(no copping out by giving them a book or something, just pick some songs)

  1. This is the the kind of question that keeps the rock n roll asylums filled beyond capacity. How many pins can you jam into an angel's head? Rock n Roll means break the rules, so it's 10 songs, not 10 minutes.
I would go into the house, plop all my vinyl on the floor and go with what filled my ears and my heart, starting off with the Beachboys "I Get Around"..."the Stones "Love in Vain"....Beatles "Revolution"....Bob Dylan "Subterranean Homesick Blues"....REM "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?".....Crowded House "Better Be Home Soon" (hinting subliminally to them).....Ray Charles "Busted"....Marshall Crenshaw "Cynical Girl"...David Johansen "Not That Much"....and Stevie Wonder "I Wish" or, depending on where they might call home, "Saturn."
If they let me live, I would tell them to return next week or whatever they call it, for another 10 spot.

  2. Bill, nice try- really, valiant effort on your part, but as we all know, Aliens have no genitalia – they copulate through some kind of mind-melding and they get their kicks from HAM radio and cat eating, please see SCIENCE. Without sexual organs the little guys have virtually no way of understanding Rock n’ Roll music. For the sake of your little experiment I will play along using context clues (aliens love context); songs exemplary of the genre which make reference to it - plus the Pixies, ‘cuz I would be remiss… Let’s begin
1.)Chuck Berry – “Let it Rock”
2.)Jimi Hendrix – “Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)”
    3.)VU – “Rock & Roll”
    4.)The Stones – “Rocks Off”
    5.)Beach Boys – “Good Vibrations”
6.)The Who – “Long Live Rock”
    7.)Bowie – “Rock n’ Roll Suicide”
8.)The Replacements – “Left of the Dial”
    9.)Pixies – “Gigantic”
    10.)Pavement – “Cut Your Hair”
(I know what you are thinking Kekevian and if you say word one about Bob Seeger, so-help-me-God I will brain you).
